Japan OAT Trip, Nov 2014. Kyoto. An example of the sidewalks found in many of the big cities. The yellowish strips have raised portions that you can feel with your feet. This is for blind people to help them stay on the sidewalks and to indicate where there are safe crosswalks. The traffic lights also have an audible signal- a chirping sound like a bird directed at that particular crosswalk. Very ingenious! The area around our hotel also had designated portions of the sidewalk for bicycles. Bicycles ride on the sidewalk, not in the street. The dark tiled area is for pedestrians and the light gray area is for bikes.
